Laura Kyrke-Smith has welcomed plans announced by the Government to ban social media use for under-16s, describing the move as a major step forward in protecting young people online.
The MP for Aylesbury has been one of Parliament's most vocal campaigners on the issue, repeatedly raising concerns about the impact of harmful online content and the growing risks posed by AI-powered chatbot platforms.
Over the past year, the Aylesbury MP has pressed Ministers to strengthen online safety measures, including highlighting concerns from local families about children being exposed to dangerous and inappropriate content.
In recent months, Kyrke-Smith brought the issue directly to the Government, raising concerns in Parliament about AI companion bots and the way they can interact with young people. The Prime Minister later responded to those concerns, acknowledging the need for stronger safeguards around emerging technologies.
The latest announcement from the Labour Government will see social media platforms restricted for under-16s, with additional measures aimed at tackling risks linked to AI companion bots.
Aylesbury's MP gave her reaction to Bucks Radio:

The announcement marks a significant milestone in a campaign that has seen the Aylesbury MP work with local residents, young people and Ministers to push for stronger protections online.
While details of how the ban will be implemented are expected to be developed in the coming months, Kyrke-Smith said the focus must now be on ensuring the measures are properly enforced and that children are protected from both harmful social media content and emerging AI-related risks.
The MP said the changes should help create a safer online environment for young people while giving parents greater confidence that children are being protected from online harms.
