Long-delayed High Wycombe highway schemes given ‘one last chance’ for completion

Friday, 18 September 2026 16:14

By Nathaniel Lawson - Local Democracy Reporter

High Wycombe highway schemes initiated up to eight years ago remain unfinished, with a councillor saying they are “stuck with” a poorly performing contractor.

The outstanding projects named at the meeting included the High Street pedestrian zone near Santander Bank and schemes at Deeds Grove and Mount Close.

Cllr Chris Chilton said the existing contractor was being given “one last chance” and said the work would be completed this year.

He made the comments while updating High Wycombe Town Committee about its parking and infrastructure programme earlier this month.

Cllr Chilton said: “We still have some outstanding schemes from phase one, which are schemes which were initiated between 2018 and 2020.

“The High Street pedestrian zone near Santander Bank and Deeds Grove and Mount Close, these are still stuck with an existing poorly performing contractor who is being given one last chance.

“We will get these done this year.”

A separate town-centre pedestrian-zone scheme dating from the programme’s second phase, covering schemes initiated between 2021 and 2023, also remains outstanding.

However, Cllr Chilton said a new contractor, not the existing one, was being briefed to undertake that work.

He added that the scheme would be completed by the end of 2026.

The committee is also progressing around 60 proposed new schemes across High Wycombe.

Initial consultations with councillors on proposals involving parking permits have been completed, while consultations on schemes involving double-yellow lines will follow.

Members will receive two email reminders and be expected to respond within 14 days.

If they fail to reply, it will be assumed that they agree with what council officers have proposed.
