Bledlow Village Cricket Club secretary Geoff Bishop has been named the latest winner of the Voneus Village Cup Club Legend award.
The award celebrates individuals who show dedication and passion to the sport and their communities, and Geoff has been recognised for his decades of service to the club.
His involvement with the club in Princes Risborough goes back for a quarter of a century, started by playing on the wicket to becoming the Bledlow Village CC secretary
Geoff also prepares the grounds for play, works behind the bar, helps maintain the facilities and acts as the club’s scorer for the village’s First XI.
He spoke about why he loves the club so much:
"I spend an awful lot of time there doing stuff, but it's a really nice social event, the cricket is fun and the whole idea is for everyone to have fun, there's a range of things we can do there. It basically gets me out of work, I work for a software company so it gets me outside and in the fresh air."
Geoff is also one of the key organisers behind the club’s Bledfest celebration, a local fundraising event held each September featuring local bands and beer.
Now in its eighth year, Bledfest has raised around £50,000 for the club, with the money used for a range of projects.
As part of Geoff’s recognition as a Voneus Village Cup Club Legend, he has received a £100 voucher to spend at Owzat.
But being the ever-selfless clubman, Geoff told us what he will spend his prize money on:
"I don't play anymore, my knees have gone, so I will spend it on Colts kit - for the youngsters. Order them a new kit and cones and balls and things like that, and I know they will get good use of it as we go through, may as well spend it on ones who can still play and enjoy it, and get more people involved!"
