Tennis club ripping up court to build two padel courts

A Bucks tennis club can rip up two of its courts to replace them with two padel tennis courts, planners have said.

Great Missenden Lawn Tennis Club had its planning application approved by Buckinghamshire Council.

The London Road sports venue now has permission to remove its tarmac court 16 at the western end of the site.

It will replace the old playing surface with two new padel courts, which will be surrounded by a glass and mesh fence, and lighting.

The application calls the existing tennis club “a successful community facility” and says that the nearest residential properties to the new courts are “some distance away within Rookwood Way”.

Padel tennis, which is sometimes likened to a combination of tennis and squash, is one of the world’s fastest growing sports with millions of players worldwide.

Players often play in doubles using padel bats and hit the ball off the court up onto the surrounding walls as part of the game.

Great Missenden Lawn Tennis Club said: “The game provides an excellent entry to tennis for juniors and beginners while also providing an alternative form of exercise for all tennis players.

“The proposals would deliver an exciting new sporting offer for the club and local community to enjoy.”
