Success as Berryfields anti-litter group holds first public event

More than 30 people turned out as a new litter picking group in Berryfields held its first public event at the weekend.

The Berry Pickers was set up by Lexi Waddell and her daughter after they moved to Aylesbury from Devon.

Lexi said the pair were involved in a beach cleaning group in Devon and said they were keen to set up something similar after they moved to Buckinghamshire. You can join the group by searching on Facebook and it already has more than 100 members.

Lexi said: "We felt the need to set up this group now because there is a lot of interest regarding climate change, pollution and what we are doing to our seas. We have noticed in recent times in our area, that not a lot of people seem to be picking up any rubbish themselves."

Inspired by the Aylesbury Wombles, the pair were determined to educate children from a young age and try to help reduce and minimise any litter that is left round the streets of Berryfields.

The group was started about a month ago after Lexi approached some like-minded friends to get involved.

It held its first major event on April 17 and Lexi distributed some litter picking equipment to those who took part, some of which were donated by companies around Aylesbury. More than 30 people took part and 46 sacks of rubbish were collected in just two hours,

Anyone who would like to go out litter picking on their own or with families can contact Lexi at any time and she will lend equipment.

Lexi said she's been amazed with the response so far.

She revealed: "There's been lots of support, lots of people showing an interest and local community companies have said they are all willing to help us.  The list is growing each day and we really can't thank everybody enough for helping us.

"it's really important pulling everybody together as a community and to educate our children about how to take pride in where we live and look after the natural habitat around it."
