The Aylesbury Household Recycling Centre on Rabans Lane was temporarily closed this morning (Friday 24 July) after a small fire broke out in a waste container.
Buckinghamshire Council says the fire is believed to have been caused by a household battery that had been disposed of in the waste.
Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service attended the scene and quickly brought the incident under control.
No-one was injured.
The site was closed for around 45 minutes while emergency services dealt with the fire, but has since reopened and is operating as normal.
The incident serves as a reminder that household batteries should never be placed in general waste, as damaged or discarded batteries can ignite and cause fires in bins, refuse vehicles and waste facilities.
Buckinghamshire Council is urging residents to recycle batteries responsibly using dedicated battery recycling points, which are available at supermarkets, many retailers and household recycling centres.
You can use our kerbside service to recycle most household batteries but they must be kept separate from your other waste and recycling.
Place batteries loose in small clear bags and put the bags on top of any bin on collection day. You can use any type of clear bag.

- damaged or leaking batteries
- car batteries - take these to a household recycling centre
- industrial batteries
