Paralympic Heritage Flame Lighting Ceremony

A celebration of the lighting the Paralympic Heritage Flame for Tokyo 2020, at Stoke Mandeville Stadium the birthplace of the Paralympic movement.

The Paralympic Movement was born at Stoke Mandeville Hospital thanks to the hard work and dedication of Dr Ludwig Guttmann.  

Jane Blackburn Paralympian and one of the Torch Bearers in the Ceremony. She competed in five Paralympic games between 1972 and 1992. She was in Stoke Mandeville after her accident when Sir Ludwig Guttmann was working there.

Susie Rodgers MBE the second torch bearer at the ceremony qualified for swimming in the London 2012 games.

Rt Hon Thérèse Coffey MP, Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions was present at the Heritage Flame Ceremony.

Also in attendance the Japanese Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Hayashi Hajime.

Martin McElhatton OBE, CEO WheelPower based as Stoke Mandeville Stadium was delighted to host such a special occasion.

Cllr Angela Macpherson, Deputy Leader of Buckinghamshire Council.

This video explores the history and development of the Paralympic Games as well as Sir Ludwig Guttmann's role, on the 70th anniversary of the 1948 Stoke Mandeville Games.
