A new 52-bed specialist rehabilitation hospital is set to be built in Stoke Mandeville after an agreement between Active Care Group and the charity WheelPower.
Active Care Group says the facility will provide specialist rehabilitation for people with spinal and neurological injuries and is expected to treat around 250 patients each year.
The hospital will be built on land owned by WheelPower and will include inpatient and day therapy facilities, a hydrotherapy pool, a high-dependency unit for patients with complex respiratory and medical needs, and family accommodation.
Plans also include rehabilitation technology such as robotic gait and arm training, virtual reality balance systems, augmented reality therapy and neuromuscular stimulation. Two technology-enabled trial flats will allow patients to practise everyday activities before returning home.
The development will also feature communal wellbeing spaces, including a cinema room and outdoor areas, alongside a learning, education and conference hub focused on rehabilitation research and innovation.

Active Care Group says the project is expected to create skilled jobs across clinical, therapy, nursing, operational and support roles.
Keith Browner, Chief Executive Officer of Active Care Group, said the hospital represents a long-term investment in specialist rehabilitation and will bring together advanced technology with expert multidisciplinary care.
WheelPower Chairman Rob Wilson said bringing rehabilitation services back to the Stoke Mandeville site was part of the charity's five-year strategic plan and reflected the vision of its founder, Sir Ludwig Guttmann.
He said combining rehabilitation services with opportunities to take part in sport would help people recovering from life-changing spinal injuries rebuild their lives and regain independence.
According to figures released with the announcement, more than 105,000 people in the UK are living with a spinal cord injury, with around 4,700 people injured or diagnosed each year.
