MP welcomes Government crackdown on zombie knives and machetes

Aylesbury MP Rob Butler has welcomed plans to tackle the devastating use of zombie knives and machetes.

The Government is planning to ban these weapons which serve no practical purpose and are solely designed to look menacing with the intention to threaten. Under the plans, criminals who buy or sell these types of knives could receive up to two years in prison.

Mr Butler said: “I very much welcome the Government announcement to ban dangerous zombie knives and machetes.”

“The dangers of these types of knives were raised to me recently by senior police officers at Thames Valley Police. No one has a legal need for these weapons, and banning them will help make our streets much safer.”

“Violent crime is down 38% since 2010, and these new plans coupled with the Conservative Government delivering on its manifesto promise to recruit 20,000 more police officers nationwide will drive this figure down further.”

Many of these deadly knives are used in horrific attacks and their ready availability online means they are increasingly common on our streets.

The Home Secretary, Suella Braveman MP said: “The thugs wielding these deadly knives aim to terrorise their victims and the public, and too often even carry out horrific or fatal attacks.”

"They are emboldened by the cowardly idea that carrying these blades inflates their own status and respect."

The seven-week public consultation announced today will look at giving the police greater powers to seize and destroy these weapons, and impose harsher penalties on the criminals who are selling them.  It will become an offence to sell them online or in shops.
