Help available for those with Parkinson's in Bucks

It's World Parkinson's Day, and the message for anyone who is diagnosed in Bucks is there is help available, and it's improving all the time.

Parkinson's Disease is the fastest growing Neurological disease, and there 1,300 patients within The Bucks Healthcare Trust.

The Amersham and High Wycombe (AHW) Branch of Parkinson's UK has financed a number of pieces of equipment for the Drake Centre in the Amersham Hospital, which will help many patients with Neurological issues and particularly Parkinson's. AHW have also been working closely with Bucks Healthcare to produce a simple flow diagram document which shows what services are available to someone with Parkinson's, both within the NHS and 3rd party providers such as the Neuro Centre (previously known as the MS centre).

Kevin Towler has lived with Parkinson's for 8 years, and is Chair of the AHW Branch. He told Bucks Radio why this document is so important, especially for those who have been newly diagnosed:

Kevin also explained how helpful it can be to join one of the Bucks branches of Parkinson's UK:

Parkinson's affects people in many different ways, not just mobility, and while medicine helps with symptoms, exercise has been show to help prevent progression.

Today (11/4/24), as part of this collaborative venture, AHW have stands in Amersham, High Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville hospitals, so that we can talk to clinical staff and also members of the Senior Management team about issues concerning People with Parkinson’s, such as getting your medication on time when in hospital

This co-operation between clinical practitioners and clinical administrators and Patients is quite unusual, but is something that should be encouraged as it enables all parties to develop a common basis so that the clinicians and patients are all clear on what is available to people with Parkinson's.
