Which roads will be affected?
The council wants to stop heavy goods vehicles ‘rat-running’ through areas like Ashendon, Brill, Chearsley and Cuddington to prevent the negative impacts of local residents.
HGVs would be banned from these areas – with exceptions for deliveries and collections – under the Waddesdon Area Freight Zone plan, which is currently out for consultation.
The proposed borders of the freight zone are north of the A418, south of the A41, east of the B4011 and west of Rabans Lane, Aylesbury.
Some of the main roads within the freight zone include Thame Road out of Brill, Main Road out of Upper Winchendon, the High Street and Bicester Road out of Ludgershall, and the Crendon and Aylesbury roads out of Chearsley.
The council has also proposed introducing a 7.5 tonne environmental weight restriction at all entry routes to the zone, with exceptions for local access.
It says the restrictions would lead to a “slight increase in HGVs on surrounding A and B roads, but this would be minimal compared to traffic levels on these busier strategic routes”.
Lorry drivers would be encouraged to use the A418, A41 and the B4011, which the council says “are more suitable for HGV traffic”.
The council added: “To the east of the area the zone would have a boundary at Rabans Lane however, we would promote trucks continuing along the A41 to the junction with the A4157 where onwards connecting routes are available.”
