In recent years, the recreational use of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas or "whippets," has surged, especially among young adults seeking a quick and cheap high.
Nitrous oxide, once primarily utilized for medical purposes and in culinary applications, has found a new, illicit role in the underground drug scene.
The Hidden Risks: While the effects of nitrous oxide may seem benign at first glance it can have devastating effects on both physical and mental health. Inhalation of the gas can lead to oxygen deprivation, resulting in dizziness, loss of consciousness, and in severe cases, asphyxiation. Additionally, frequent use can cause vitamin B12 deficiency, nerve damage, and impaired cognitive function, leading to long-term neurological complications.
Last month the Aylesbury Vale Neighbourhood Team from Thames Valley Police teamed up with the Southcourt Baptist Church & Community Centre in Penn Road Southcourt, to install the first Nitrous Oxide amnesty bin in the Country.
Already nearly 60 large industrial cans have been handed in, and it's hoped this success will lead to more bins being rolled out in other Thames Valley Police areas.
Graham Clarke, Community Pastor, Southcourt Baptist Church, highlighted that it was important to make the public feel safe. "With no questions asked and no CCTV, we want to make it as comfortable as possible for the community to use our amnesty bins."
