The Paralympic Flame will be lit today (Tuesday 24 February) at Stoke Mandeville, the symbolic heart of the Paralympic Movement, marking the beginning of the journey toward the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games.
Following the lighting ceremony, the Flame will travel to Italy to begin an official 2,000-kilometre Torch Relay. Carried by 501 torchbearers, the relay will culminate in the Opening Ceremony on 6 March in Verona.
The ceremony will be attended by International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons, Paralympics GB President Dan Brooke, and Countess Elizabeth Howe, Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Buckinghamshire, representing WheelPower. All four will deliver speeches at the event, which will be presented by Dame Sarah Storey, Britain’s most successful Paralympic athlete. The honour of lighting the Paralympic Flame will be shared by British alpine skier Millie Knight, a three-time Paralympian and four-time medallist, and Andrea Macrì, captain of the Italian Para Ice Hockey national team and Ambassador for the Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation, as he prepares for his fifth Paralympic Games.
