Man convicted of preparing acts of terrorism after travelling to Syria

A man has pleaded guilty to preparing for acts of terrorism after he travelled to Syria to join a terrorist group and received weapons training.

Shabazz Suleman of Freemantle Road in High Wycombe was arrested in September 2021.

The 27-year-old was charged on 5 October that year with the following:

  • Having committed offences of preparing for acts of terrorism, under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

  • Membership of a proscribed organisation, under Section 11 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

  • Receiving weapons training, under Section 54 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Today (14/4) Suleman pleaded guilty to preparing for acts of terrorism, the other two charges will remain on file.

In 2014, Suleman went on a family holiday to Turkey, using this as his opportunity to travel on to Syria where he joined the terrorist group, Deash, received weapons training and preformed guard duties.

He was arrested on his return to the UK at Heathrow Airport.

Detective Chief Superintendent Olly Wright, Head of CTPSE, said: “Suleman left the UK in 2014 to join Daesh and receive weapons training with the intention of engaging in terrorist acts abroad.

“This case is a reminder that if you commit terrorism offences, police will continue to seek to prosecute you – no matter how much time has elapsed.

“Suleman left the country to receive this training but when our officers became aware of what he had done, they collated evidence of his actions and intentions, and arrested him on his return to the UK, where he was taken into custody.

“Through the support and hard work of those involved in this case, Suleman has now been brought to justice and by pleading guilty has admitted his actions and views were not acceptable."

Suleman will be sentenced at the Central Criminal Court on Friday 26 May.
