Local charity's new fundraising event raises over £35,000

Over 400 men, women and children covered over 3,000 miles around Aylesbury last Saturday to raise funds for Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity in their new summer event, Walk of Light.

The walk took place through the green and open spaces around Watermead, Meadowcroft and Berryfields throughout the afternoon and evening, and ended with some poignant words from the Hospice’s Chaplain, Pete Griffiths and a display of ‘Lights of Love’, covered with dedication messages to loved ones and thanks to the Hospice team against the backdrop of Watermead Lake.

“We are so thrilled that so many Walkers braved the heat to support us this weekend,” says Lee Lloyd, Head of Fundraising.  “There was a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day, and reading with dedication messages on the Lights of Love really reminds us what the purpose of the Walk is – to raise funds to support dedicated and specialist hospice care so our nurses can be there for more patients and their families across Buckinghamshire and its borders.”

Paula Miller walked in memory of her husband Jed, who was cared for by the Hospice’s community team last year.

“I would like thank you everyone who helped organise, volunteered and took part. My family and I were so grateful for the care and support of the Hospice at Home team last year when my dear husband Jed needed palliative care. Everything about the evening was amazing.”

“We are so grateful to everyone who helped us make this event possible, to our sponsors, ASM Recycling, Aston Commercial Cleaning and Slenderpane and to our amazing team of volunteers, who kept our Walkers safe and motivated throughout the day.” said Jo Turner, the charity’s CEO. “We can’t wait to return next year, and see the event grow and grow in the future.”

The Walk has already raised over £35,000 for the charity, with sponsorship money continuing to come in.  You can still donate online at https://justgiving.com/campaign/walkoflight23
