One of Buckinghamshire’s largest planned housing developments is set to move forward after years of delays, as the government confirmed Hampden Fields in Aylesbury will be among the first sites targeted by its New Homes Accelerator programme.
The 3,000-home development, long stalled in the planning system, is now receiving direct support from Homes England and government experts to remove barriers and speed up construction. Ministers say the intervention will help get “spades in the ground” more quickly, with at least a quarter of the new homes earmarked as affordable.
Hampden Fields is one of six major sites identified for immediate action, alongside two in London, as part of the government’s push to deliver 12,000 new homes in the short term.
Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary Angela Rayner said the move demonstrated the government’s determination to tackle the housing shortage:
“We’ve rolled up our sleeves and are breaking down the barriers which stop us from building the houses to buy and rent that families and young people need. Hampden Fields and other sites will benefit directly from the expertise of the New Homes Accelerator, helping us speed up the delivery of homes and turn the tide on the housing crisis.”
The New Homes Accelerator, established last year, has already helped unblock nearly 100,000 homes across England by boosting local planning capacity and cutting through regulatory delays. In addition to Hampden Fields, the expert team is working with councils and developers nationwide to push forward stalled developments and accelerate planning proposals.
The government says the initiative is a key pillar of its Plan for Change, which commits to building 1.5 million homes, reforming the planning system and investing £39 billion into social and affordable housing.
