Councillor resigns after ‘spending more time on Isle of Wight’ than in Bucks

Friday, 22 September 2023 13:00

By Charlie Smith - Local Democracy Reporter

A Conservative Bucks councillor has resigned because he was spending more time on the Isle of Wight than in his ward.

Warren Whyte resigned from Buckinghamshire Council on September 19, triggering a by-election in his Buckingham East Ward on November 2.

Nominations for candidates to replace Mr Whyte can be submitted between September 29 and October 6.

Mr Whyte is an architect with his own firm that specialises in ‘heritage, ecclesiastical and complex projects’, according to his website.

The outgoing councillor has strong links to the Isle of Wight, where he is listed as a deputy chairman of the Conservative Association.

Last summer, he also opened a bookshop specialising in old cars called ‘Flaneur’ in the Isle of Wight village of Freshwater.

Mr Whyte was not immediately available for comment, but several Council sources have told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that he has left Buckinghamshire to fully embrace island life.

One said: “Warren decided over the summer holidays that this is the best time for him to resign.

“This is to enable him spend more time on the Isle of Wight and devote more time to his business.”

Another added: “He resigned because he was spending more time on the Isle of Wight and is also developing a business there.”
