Crews have been responding to incidents across the county this week.
Just a day after suspected arson caused extensive damage to Buckingham farmland, six crews responded to another field fire in Wing yesterday (30/07).
The incident forced the closure of the A418 between Wing and Wingrave in both directions last night, with six crews and two officers using five hose reel jets, multiple beaters and a thermal imaging camera to tackle the blaze.
It closely followed the significant field fire adjacent to A413 London Road, Buckingham on Wednesday evening (29/07), which required the attendance of eight fire appliances. The fire affected an area of approximately 200m x 200m and caused extensive damage to farmland, hedgerows and a number of hay bales. Following initial enquiries, two juveniles were arrested on suspicion of arson who have since been bailed.
Other field and outdoor incidents this week include:
- an outdoor fire in Padbury (29/07), where one crew from Aylesbury attended a fire in the open involving a large pile of woodchips on the edge of a field. Firefighters used one hose reel and haydrags to extinguish the fire. Crews also took time damping down the area to avoid fire spread.
- a grass fire at Witan Gate, Milton Keynes (28/07) where two crews attended a fire involving approximately 10m x 5m of bushes and grass alight, with smoke issuing from the area. They used one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby vegetation.
-
a farm fire at St Leonards in Tring (28/07) where several crews attended a fire involving a large pile of chaff at a farm. Firefighters used a hose reel jet and a wildfire 4×4 unit to tackle the fire, working alongside the landowner who provided farm machinery to pull apart the chaff and expose hotspots. They also used approximately 1,800 litres of water on affected areas at overnight reinspection visits.
It follows extended periods of hot dry weather across the country, with the Environment Agency announcing on Wednesday that half of England is in drought.
