Bucks Primary schools partnering to keep school days smartphone free

Nine schools in the Thame Partnership have adopted a shared approach.

Cuddington and Dinton Church of England School and Haddenham’s infant and junior schools are among those who will ensure pupils from Reception to Year 6 do not have access to smartphones during the school day.

The partnership of schools across Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire say this reinforces their "commitment to children's wellbeing, learning and healthy social development".

They added that the initiative reflects "growing evidence" which links excessive smartphone use with "increased anxiety, reduced concentration, online safety risks and disrupted sleep", whilst also aiming to promote calmer classrooms and stronger face-to-face friendships.

The schools supporting the shared approach are:

Aston Rowant Church of England Primary School

Cuddington and Dinton Church of England School

Haddenham Infant School

Haddenham Junior School

John Hampden Primary School, Thame

Mill Lane Community Primary School, Chinnor

St Andrews Church of England School, Chinnor

St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Thame

Tetsworth County Primary School

The partnership say together they are committed to "creating environments where children can learn, thrive and enjoy their childhood free from unnecessary digital pressures".

With a consistent approach across the schools, they also hope to ease the pressure on families to provide smartphones for younger children. In the event a child needs a phone for safety or independent travel, parents are instead encouraged to consider a basic mobile phone without internet access.
