The days are designed to give disabled adults the opportunity to experience exciting outdoor activities in a supportive, inclusive and fully accessible environment.
The Richard Whitehead Foundation delivered its first Inclusion Through Adventure Day pilot event at Woodrow High House in Amersham, with sponsorship support from Nissan.
The event welcomed disabled adults from across the community for a full day of accessible outdoor activities in a fun, inclusive and encouraging environment.
Participants had the opportunity to experience activities including:
- Archery
- High ropes
- Mountain biking
- Team activities and social connection opportunities
The event aimed to demonstrate how outdoor adventure can be adapted to suit a wide range of abilities while helping participants develop confidence, resilience and new friendships.
The Amersham pilot event was considered a major success and marked the beginning of a wider programme focused on making adventure more inclusive and accessible for all.
The Richard Whitehead Foundation is a charitable organisation dedicated to improving opportunities for disabled people through sport, physical activity and inclusive community programmes.
Founded by Paralympic athlete and disability advocate entity "athlete", "Richard Whitehead", "British Paralympic athlete", the Foundation works to inspire confidence, break down barriers and create more accessible opportunities for people of all abilities.
The Foundation’s mission centres on promoting inclusion, independence and wellbeing by encouraging disabled people to participate in sport, adventure and community activities. Through partnerships with organisations, schools, businesses and local communities, the Foundation develops programmes that help people build confidence, improve physical and mental wellbeing, and feel more connected to others.
One of the Foundation’s growing initiatives is the Inclusion Through Adventure Day programme, designed to make outdoor adventure activities accessible and welcoming for disabled adults.
The programme is focused on creating opportunities for disabled people to challenge themselves, discover new interests and enjoy outdoor experiences that may not otherwise be easily accessible.
Following the success of the Amersham pilot event, the Richard Whitehead Foundation is planning additional Inclusion Through Adventure Days in new locations.
The Foundation aims to continue expanding the programme to reach more disabled adults across the country, offering more opportunities for people to participate in accessible outdoor adventure experiences.
