King Charles III's Coronation: Local MPs have their say

Friday, 5 May 2023 07:00

By James Bagley - Local Democracy Reporter

Celebrations will soon be had across the UK to mark King Charles III’s Coronation – but is it worth the grandeur and public money?

As many people will no doubt be coming together to celebrate the new age of the Monarchy, others are less so and believe the institution is no longer required in modern times.

That’s the question the Local Democracy Reporting Service put to MPs across Bucks as well the council leader. Here are their responses:

Beaconsfield MP Joy Morrissey (Con)

“The British Monarchy represents the very best of Britain. From the numerous charities the Royals support to the ceremonial role it plays in our constitution, the Monarchy is part of the fabric of our society here in the UK.

“Not only does the Coronation play an important part in maintaining constitutional tradition, but it serves as a reminder to the world about just how great Britain is.

“I wholeheartedly support the Monarchy and know that they will continue to play as vital a role in this country’s future, just as they have done since 1603.”

The leader of Buckinghamshire Council Martin Tett (Con)

“The British monarchy is a much-loved institution with over a thousand years of history. It offers something unique to the fabric of British society in terms of stability and direction for our country and I’m a proud supporter of the Royal Family.

“Of course, I feel that, like politics, there is a need for our monarchy to reflect the times we are in and that – as with all bodies that exist to represent the people – it needs to be agile and able to adapt to social change. But that doesn’t mean it cannot continue to be entirely relevant and as far as I am concerned, long may the British Monarchy continue.

“I look forward very much to celebrating the Coronation of the new King this weekend and seeing our communities in Buckinghamshire come together to mark this great moment in British history.”

Wycombe MP Steve Baker (Con)

“I am pleased to be attending the Coronation in Westminster Abbey on Saturday to represent the people of Wycombe. I have served as an officer in the Royal Air Force and received my commission from the Queen. I am proud to have served my country and the monarch.

“I will be happy to pledge my allegiance to King Charles during the Coronation service. The monarchy is one of those great British institutions which, like so much of our uncodified constitution, works brilliantly in practice if not in principle.

“As the Coronation is a function of the State it is right we mark this properly and celebrate this moment in the life of our nation.”

Chesham and Amersham Sarah Green (Lib Dem)

“King Charles’ coronation marks the beginning of a new era.

“For decades, the King has displayed an unwavering commitment to public service. In championing young people, the environment and farming he was ahead of his time. His decision to support voluntary service with Monday’s ‘The Big Help Out’ affirms his commitment to using his platform for good. I look forward to seeing how this historic institution adapts and modernises, just as it did throughout the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

“The notion that we should rid ourselves of such public servants would be the true expression of knowing a notional cost without understanding the inherent value.

“While individual views on the Royal Family may differ, the past year has demonstrated their unique ability to bring the country together. This Bank Holiday weekend has something to offer for everyone, and I hope we are all able to enjoy it with family, friends and neighbours.”

Aylesbury MP Rob Butler (Con)

“The Coronation is a wonderful moment – both a solemn occasion to crown the Monarch and an opportunity for the country to come together to celebrate the reign of our new King. I was delighted to meet Their Majesties the King and Queen Consort during their visit to Parliament on Tuesday, and send them every good wish.”
