The category B prison has been praised in its annual report.
Staff and prisoners at HMP Grendon have been commended for the way they’ve adapted to life in 2020.
The facility at Spring Hill near Grendon Underwood specialises in providing help to inmates with special needs, including those with personality disorders and learning difficulties.
During 'normal' times, inmates, or ‘residents’ as they’re called, are offered special therapy to support them from reoffending, but most of this needed to be cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Despite the pandemic, self harm and violence remained low, with video technology used to help prisoners maintain links with loved ones during national lockdowns. They were also given longer access to mobile phones when regular visits were cancelled over Christmas.
There were some negatives. For example, one inmate was wrongly taken for another man’s health check, resulting in a delay in treatment.
But with no recorded COVID cases in the facility for the entire year, the prison has been praised by the Independent Monitoring Board for the way it’s handled the pandemic.
