Fourth Covid jab offered to vulnerable as new cases continue to rise

The latest Covid-19 data for Buckinghamshire shows that new infections have risen 44% compared to the previous week, as the whole country faces a new surge of the virus.

There were 5,190 reported new cases in Bucks in the last seven days.

Sadly, 8 more people have died with Covid-19 on their death certificate in the region.

In response to soaring infections, driven by the Omicron sub-variant called BA2, the NHS has began offering a fourth vaccine dose to those with a severely weakened immune system.

This includes if you had or have:

  • a blood cancer (such as leukaemia or lymphoma)
  • a weakened immune system due to a treatment (such as steroid medicine, biological therapy, chemotherapy or radiotherapy)
  • an organ or bone marrow transplant
  • a condition that means you have a very high risk of getting infections
  • a condition or treatment your specialist advises makes you eligible for a 3rd dose and a booster (4th dose)

Those eligible will be contacted by their GP but you can find out more here.

Two thirds (66.6%) of those eligible in Buckinghamshire have now had their third or booster shot, which experts say is critical for fighting all variants of Omicron.

Although the Government has now lifted the legal regulations around Covid-19, the medical advice remains the same.

The NHS website states: While you’re no longer required by law to self-isolate if you have COVID-19, you should still stay at home and avoid contact with other people. This helps reduce the chance of passing COVID-19 on to others.

The advice from the NHS to avoid catching or spreading Covid-19 also remains as follows:

-              Get vaccinated against COVID-19

-              Meet people outside if possible

-              Open doors and windows to let in fresh air if meeting people inside

-              Limit the number of people you meet

-              Avoid crowded places

-              Wear a face mask in shops, on public transport and other crowded indoor spaces

-              Wash your hands or use hand sanitiser regularly
