Arthur Richards, founder of Albany Carpets and a pillar of the town's high street for more than five decades, has sadly died at the age of 91.
He first came to Aylesbury in 1964, bringing with him a wealth of experience from working in Bletchley, where he had made carpets alongside his brother Dennis. Initially setting up in Castle Street, Arthur quickly made a name for himself by supplying quality carpets and offering a trusted fitting service to the people of Aylesbury.
In 1970, he purchased the business's current home at 7 Buckingham Street, where he would go on to enjoy 55 years of trading - marking an extraordinary 65 years in the carpet industry overall.
Arthur was more than just a businessman. Known for his warmth, passion, and dedication, he took great pride in helping and advising his customers - always with enthusiasm, sincerity, and a personal touch that made him stand out. Over the years, many customers became close friends, drawn back not just by the quality of the carpets but by Arthur himself.
Though Arthur has sadly passed, his legacy continues to live on. Albany Carpets remains a thriving family business, now run by his son Simon, who carries on his father's proud tradition of service and community connection.
Arthur's presence will be sorely missed, but his name and spirit will always be part of the fabric of Aylesbury.
