The number of patients in hospital in Buckinghamshire with Covid-19 has increased by 73% over the last three weeks as a fifth wave of the virus sweeps the nation.
The number of people testing positive in Buckinghamshire has also more than doubled in that time in a surge that is spreading faster than the previous wave of Omicron due to the greater transmissibility of the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants.
An increase in cases was first identified following the jubilee weekend celebrations held between 2nd June – 5th June, with a 43% rise in infections occurring immediately after the four-day Bank Holiday to mark the Queen’s 70th anniversary on the throne.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) says 1.3 million people tested positive in the week ending 18th June in England – as high as the numbers have ever been since the start of the pandemic.
The Zoe Covid study, which has also been collecting data throughout the pandemic, predicts that about 3.1 million people currently have symptomatic Covid-19 in the UK – around 1 in 22 people.
The surge is only three weeks old so it is currently unclear if the situation will result in a rise in Covid-19 related deaths.
