Councils use HS2 fund to improve road safety on A40 at Denham ​

New high kerbs have been installed on the A40 at Denham following a bid to the HS2 Road Safety Fund.

The high containment kerbs have now been installed on the A40 at Denham in front of the ESSO and BP service stations, with the aim of discouraging parking.

Last week,  Cllr Steven Broadbent, Cabinet Member for Transport and Cllr Peter Martin, Deputy Cabinet Member Transport (HS2/EWR), met with local Ward Member for Denham - Cllr Santokh Chhokar, and Sharon Williams ­ - Chairman of Denham Parish Council, to see at first hand, what has been delivered.

Commenting on the work that has taken place Cllr Broadbent said: "HGV parking and movements outside these service stations has been a longstanding problem, causing not only damage to the pavements and kerbs, but also compromising safety for pedestrians and blocking visibility of the road and service station exits for drivers."

The HS2 RSF has provided £3.95m to Buckinghamshire to implement schemes that will create a legacy of road safety in areas impacted by HS2 construction. The funding is being released in three tranches, for applications from, or with the support of Parish Councils.

£2.6m has been made available in the first two tranches, advertised in 2021 and 2022. 17 schemes were approved under Tranche 1; in Tranche 2, six schemes have been approved and a further six are currently subject to feasibility work, before final funding decisions are made.

Schemes already delivered by Buckinghamshire Council using the HS2 Road Safety Fund are:

• Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) for use in Quainton, Stone, Grendon Underwood, Waddesdon and Westcott
• Signage and road markings to improve visibility of the junction between School Hill and Perry Hill at Charndon
• 18km of white reflective edging along various sections of the A4010 between Great Kimble and the Pedestal Roundabout at West Wycombe, to improve visibility of the road edges, especially at night
• Gateway entry features at Saunderton
• Improved visibility of the Bradenham Lane junction on the A4010 and at the arched railway bridge going into High Wycombe, together with traffic calming signage

• Resurfacing of the A410/A412 junction to repair damage to the highway caused by HS2 

By the end of May 2023, we aim to make final decisions on Tranche 2 schemes and also finalise a delivery programme for all remaining approved schemes with Buckinghamshire Council's new highways partners.
