Perfumer Jo Malone made the donation to Medical Detection Dogs in Great Horwood.
The money will fund an olfactory research platform for the charity called "SniffSpace", which hopes to transform the way diseases are detected by their dogs and to help them progress their project creating an "electronic nose".
The charity say Jo Malone's (CBE) £100,000 investment will enable them to collect more detailed data on their dogs' behaviour, "using measurements of the subtle ways in which they communicate their decisions to support the development of E-nose technology".The pioneering technology, designed by Dr Andreas Mershin at Realnose,ai, could recreate their detection at a larger scale.
They say the new equipment, funded entirely by Malone CBE, represents a significant step forward in their journey. The perfumer has been an ambassador of Medical Detection Dogs for almost 10 years.
She told the charity she feel's proud to be part of the project, having seen its beginnings years ago, and said that for her:
"There's something deeply personal about it. My sense of smell has given me so much throughout my life. It has shaped my career, opened doors for me and given me opportunities I could never have imagined. So I have always wanted to find a way of using that world of smell to give something back. And this feels like that opportunity.”
A team of dogs will now be prepared for their training on the equipment, which will be installed in the new year.
