Lloyds Banking Group has announced the closure of five branches in Buckinghamshire by the end of September this year, in a move strongly criticised by a local MP.
The group, which owns Lloyds Bank, Halifax and the Bank of Scotland, revealed the local closures are included as part of 60 occurring across the country as they move towards online banking.
In response to the news, Buckingham MP Greg Smith Tweeted: "The Lloyds Bank decision to close the last bank in Buckingham is deeply disappointing and I urge them to reconsider
“I get it that most of us go online and don't use branches any more. But many still DO rely on branches and Lloyds are deeply irresponsible to be closing this one."
The following branches are set to close between June and September this year:
- Halifax in Beaconsfield
- Lloyds Bank in Beaconsfield
- Lloyds Bank at Aylesbury Gatehouse
- Lloyds Bank in Buckingham
- Lloyds Bank in Marlow
Buckingham has been named as one of three locations affected that will become part of the new banking hub scheme which sees the largest High Street banks jointly providing services in a shared space, usually from a Post Office, with representatives from each bank occupying a counter on certain days of the week.
The hub will be in place before the Buckingham branch closes, which is currently set to be on 9th September.
In a statement, Vim Maru, group retail director, said: "Just like many other high street businesses, fewer customers are choosing to visit our branches.
"Our branch network is an important way for us to support our customers, but we need to adapt to the significant growth in customers choosing to do most of their everyday banking online."
