it's due to the rising prices of fuel, with criminals stealing number plates to then use at petrol stations when stealing fuel so they don't get recognised.
James Davies, Neighbourhood Inspector for the Aylesbury Vale, has also seen a rise in catalytic converters which contain these precious metals:
“The stark truth is that your catalytic converter can be stolen in a matter of seconds, but it can take weeks to find a replacement because of the shortage in the precious metals required which would historically come from Russia.
“Complete prevention is almost impossible but there are some steps you can take to deter and delay thieves.
“For number plates you can use tamper proof screws.
“For catalytic converters you can have locks and guards attached.
“You could also consider a doorbell that records CCTV, so that we have a chance at catching these criminals if they do strike.
“That said I am a realist and people have busy lives and money is tight. So if all you do is park your car in a well lit area, in a position that makes it difficult to get under the car then that is better than doing nothing”
