Aylesbury MP gives 'strong support' to new law targeting rogue taxi drivers

Aylesbury MP Rob Butler has given his strong support to a new law designed to protect members of the public from disreputable taxi drivers.

A bill introduced to the House of Commons by Peter Gibson, Conservative Member of Parliament for Darlington, will create a central database accessible by all local authorities where they will have to record when they have refused licences and give details of complaints and concerns about drivers.

Authorities in other areas will also have to take those concerns into account when issuing new licences.

Speaking after the debate, Rob said: “Taxis are a lifeline for many vulnerable and isolated people across the Aylesbury constituency and our local taxi drivers have done sterling work throughout the pandemic helping people get to important appointments, including at the vaccination centres.

"However, I was surprised and alarmed to find that there is currently no centralised database for reporting incidents that may be of concern and could put vulnerable passengers at risk. My colleague Peter Gibson has done a brilliant job to rectify this omission by bringing forth his bill, and I look forward to seeing it become law.”
