17 year old Anna Pattle has written The Ascension of Greenville, a young adult novel delving into reactions to authority and disease
Anna explained to us that after her GCSE's were cancelled in Summer 2020, she used her free time to write her book.
"It was definitely my main property to stay focused on school work but writing is obviously a really enjoyable hobby of mine, so I essentially wrote the novel during the long summer break and made changes during half term and holidays."
The idea for her book came from another novel, The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio, in which the characters are fleeing a virus. So Anna wanted to bring that theme into the present tense, to relate to the worldwide pandemic she was experiencing.
"I thought that was a really interesting concept, especially considering the different ways which people have reacted to COVID19 and its impacts, I thought it would be very interesting to have a concept similar to that, for a book."
