The two sixth-formers from Aylesbury Vale Academy told us about their experience visiting the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland.
The Holocaust Educational Trust’s ‘Lessons from Auschwitz Project’ offers students across the UK the chance 'to develop their historical understanding of the Holocaust and apply that learning to contemporary issues'. Emily and Megan were selected to take part in the project as the first representatives from AVA, flying to Poland last month.
Speaking to Richard Carr, the students said the most impactful things they saw was the room of small baby clothes and shoes, with Emily adding that 'its very sad that they felt the need to kill something that small'.
Megan found that the experience felt surreal, 'seeing the sights that they saw [...] you're in the exact place that they were'. She added that part of the project's aims to show students 'how we can learn from these past horrors'.

Rachel Leach, Assistant Principal at Aylesbury Vale Academy, said that the project was 'a brilliant opportunity for the school' and 'really reminds us how harrowing it was'.
Back in 2018, Richard Carr joined around 200 students from schools and colleges across the Thames Valley and Chilterns taking part in the ‘Lessons from Auschwitz Project' to visit the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
