Before the actual vote count begins, there's a vital first step: verification. It’s where staff check that the number of ballot papers matches polling station records. Once verified, the ballots — including postal votes — are mixed to maintain anonymity. Only then does the counting of votes for each candidate begin, leading to the official declaration of the winners.

It’s a busy scene here at the count centre, where staff are working methodically to process thousands of ballot papers.  Now, verified papers are being mixed with postal votes ahead of the official count. It’s a meticulous process, ensuring accuracy before results are announced.

11:00  - Friday 2nd May

All votes from yesterday’s election have now arrived at the stadium, where verificaton began at 10 this morning.

Verification — checking that the number of ballot papers matches records from each polling station.

Once verified, those papers are mixed with postal votes before the official count will begin at 1pm.

Any unclear or spoiled ballots are reviewed by the Returning Officer, who decides if they’ll be included.

Once all votes are counted, the results will be announced and the winning candidates declared.
