THE HISTORY
The Bucks County Show, one of Britain’s longest-running agricultural events, stands as a proud symbol of Buckinghamshire’s rural heritage, drawing crowds and competitors alike for more than 160 years.
Founded in 1859 as the Royal and Central Bucks Agricultural Show, the event was born from the unification of earlier farming societies in the region. It adopted the name Royal Bucks Show in 1891, and by 1923, it became known by its present name—the Bucks County Show.
Over the decades, the show has rotated through various locations across the county including Chesham, Marlow, High Wycombe, Winslow, Bletchley, Waddesdon, and Mentmore. From 1952 to 1988, the grounds of Hartwell House hosted the event before it moved permanently to Weedon Park near Aylesbury, where it remains today.
The show has historically taken place on the first Thursday of September, a change introduced in 1952 from its original mid-September slot. Despite its long and storied run, the Bucks County Show has only been interrupted a handful of times—most notably during the World Wars, the 2001 foot-and-mouth outbreak, and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.
Now held annually in late August, the Bucks County Show has evolved into a bustling, family-friendly celebration of countryside life. Run by the Bucks County Agricultural Association, the event boasts over 60 cattle classes, 30 sheep competitions, and nearly 80 equine events, including qualifiers for prestigious national contests such as the Horse of the Year Show and the Royal International Horse Show.
In addition to livestock and equestrian showcases, attendees can enjoy vintage tractor exhibitions, food halls, countryside demonstrations, children’s petting zones, and stunt-filled arena acts.
As organisers prepare for the next edition of the show, locals and visitors alike are reminded of its enduring role in preserving Buckinghamshire’s farming traditions and fostering community spirit.
The Bucks County Show isn’t just an agricultural event—it’s a celebration of rural resilience, continuity, and the timeless charm of English country life.
