Wendover Parish Council has confirmed that the town’s war memorial has been found to be structurally unsound following recent cleaning works.
According to the Council, part of the top section of the memorial’s column became detached during the cleaning process and has been removed to the nearby clock tower for safety. Concerns have now been raised about the stability of the remaining structure.
As a result, the memorial has been fenced off and warning signs have been put in place to protect the public.
The Council is in contact with the heritage officer at Buckinghamshire Council to assess the next steps. A full structural evaluation will determine whether the entire column will need to be removed immediately.
The timing of the discovery comes just weeks before the annual Remembrance Parade, an important event in the town’s calendar. The Parish Council acknowledged the situation is "deeply frustrating and upsetting" but stressed that efforts are underway to ensure the memorial is preserved and restored for the community as soon as possible.
Further updates will be provided as assessments continue.
