Local volunteers are needed to help Bucks children in care

A children's rights charity are working alongside Bucks Council to find volunteers to help local children in care.

A children's rights charity are working alongside Bucks Council to find volunteers to help local children in care.

The National Youth Advocacy Service, or NYAS for short, looking for volunteers to befriend and be matched with a young person in care and visit them once a month to do a fun activity.

Independent coordinator Lauren Floutiers, told us more about the volunteering role at NYAS:

"You don't need any particular qualifications, you will be given adequate training once you've completed the application and gone through the requirement process. We ask volunteers to pop out and see the young person they've matched with at least once every four weeks, so it's not a huge commitment in that sense."

NYAS are looking for any volunteers interested in the role, but as their children are 50/50 male to female, and they do get more female volunteers apply, NYAS are asking for any male volunteers in particular.

Children who you will likely to be matched up with will be 9 years old +, and will have different and wonderful interests and hobbies, all volunteers will also be reimbursed for any fun activities they go on with their matched young person.

Lauren told us just how important this volunteer role is, and how much it can mean to a child in care:

"So an independent volunteer is someone who is independent to the other services that are involved in that persons life. Often children in care don't have necessarily consistent adults so an 'independent visitor' really provides that. They are able to engage them in new opportunities and new experiences that they've made ever had before, so it's a really worthwhile volunteering post."
