Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust has said that it’s currently facing extreme pressure, largely due to the number of patients with Covid-19 doubling in recent days.
The latest available data shows that the number of patients admitted to hospital in the region with Covid-19 increased by 67% in the latest week but these figures lag about ten days behind.
With the whole country currently experiencing a new surge of the virus, it’s likely numbers will continue to increase in the coming weeks.
Sadly, the latest data also shows five people died with Covid-19 within 28 days of a positive test in the week ending 1st October.
The NHS Trust adds that the number of patients who are medically fit to go home, but who can’t be discharged without a care package, occupy a significant percentage of beds and the numbers of acutely unwell people attending A&E has been high.
In short, this means they are seeing more admissions and fewer discharges than would normally be expected at this time of year.
Consequently, the public are being asked to keep A&E for emergencies and to only attend in an emergency.
Chief Nurse at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, Karen Bonner, said: “We’re experiencing a high demand for our emergency department. I ask that you consider before you come there to ensure we can keep it free for life-threatening emergencies and those needing urgent treatment.”
The Trust says its immediate priority is to ensure they can care for the most seriously ill patients.
