The once-grey Cambridge Street underpass in Aylesbury has been given a dramatic new lease of life thanks to the creativity of eleven young people and the support of local organisations
Over three weeks, the underpass was transformed into a vibrant public artwork celebrating community, positivity, and youth achievement.
The project was spearheaded by the Aylesbury Community Board in partnership with Aylesbury Town Council, Youth Concern, and the Youth Justice Service. Young volunteers designed and painted striking murals, learning spray-painting techniques while working collaboratively to brighten the well-used pedestrian route.
The official opening took place on Wednesday 20 August with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Cllr Andy Huxley, Chairperson of the Aylesbury Community Board, and Cllr Mark Winn, Deputy Chairperson. Nidi Metha, Mayor of Aylesbury, presented certificates to the young participants, recognising their hard work and commitment.
Emily Campbell, Youth Initiative Officer at Aylesbury Town Council, praised the volunteers’ efforts:
“It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm, creativity, and pride in what they were achieving.”
The initiative follows the success of a similar project at the Vale Park underpass last year, which also engaged young residents in creative urban improvement.
Steve Bowles, Cabinet Member for Communities at Buckinghamshire Council, said the project showcased the power of youth-led initiatives:
“This is a fantastic example of how we can support young people to take pride in their local area and make a real difference. The transformation of the Cambridge Street underpass shows the power of creativity and collaboration.”
For the young people involved, the experience offered more than just an opportunity to paint. It was a chance to gain new skills, invest in their community, and demonstrate the positive role young residents can play in shaping public spaces.
The Cambridge Street project is part of wider efforts across Buckinghamshire to revitalise shared spaces and foster community-led improvements.
