Emma Kirkman is planning on taking on the challenge in August.
The English Channel Swim is approximately 21 miles but due to currents, winds and other factors a swimmer can cover significantly more miles. During the swim season, which is roughly July to September, the water temperature ranges from 14°C to 18°C and the swim will be unassisted meaning that she will be wearing only a swimsuit, cap, and goggles.
Emma first started open swimming in 2011 and more recently has swam from Jersey to France in July 2024 as part of her training for this feat. She completed that swim in 8 hours and 51 minutes.
Kirkman is raising money for the Firefighters Charity. She has been serving as a Wholetime Firefighter for Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue for over 7 years.
