A Bucks Volunteer Driver Service organiser has created a petition to get the HMRC mileage rate changed from 45p/mile to 50p/mile.
60% of their journeys to take patients to non emergency hospital appointments were on behalf of South Central Ambulance in the last year. Around 7000 journeys were made by volunteers across the Thames Valley.
Petition organiser, Keith Davies said: "It will make a difference to the volunteer drivers to be paid just that small amount more, whilst keeping our wonderful service cost effective for our community transport passengers."
Keith added the volunteers are not trying to make a profit but he is concerned the cost of fuel will drive volunteers away if the mileage rate is not increased.
Keith is appealing for support for the petition adding they only need 100,000 signatures for it to be debated in Parliament.
The Volunteer Driver Service was established April 2012 as a project of Citizens Advice.
