Aylesbury MP Calls for Infrastructure Boost Following Government Transport Funding

Laura Kyrke-Smith says poor infrastructure is harming residents' quality of life and has urged Buckinghamshire Council to prioritise investment in Aylesbury.

Following the Government’s announcement of £1.4 million in new funding for Buckinghamshire, Aylesbury’s MP has called for urgent action to improve the town’s roads and transport links,

Speaking in Parliament, Laura Kyrke-Smith said she regularly hears from constituents who are frustrated by traffic congestion, limited rail connections and concerns about pedestrian safety. She said the issue of infrastructure comes up “again and again” in conversations with local residents.

“Whether it’s the much-needed Eastern Link Road, the rail link to Milton Keynes or the many traffic hotspots, the same issue keeps coming up: poor infrastructure is impacting people’s lives,” said Mrs Kyrke-Smith.

The MP welcomed the new funding from the Department for Transport, which is aimed at supporting local transport improvements across the county. She said it presents a real opportunity to deliver long-awaited upgrades in Aylesbury.

“The Government’s announcement of £1.4 million of investment into transport funding for Buckinghamshire is hugely welcome,” she told Parliament. “It opens up the potential to decrease congestion, improve pedestrian safety and much more.”

Mrs Kyrke-Smith is now urging Buckinghamshire Council to use a share of the funding to focus on Aylesbury, which she says needs a “significant boost” to meet the needs of its growing population.

Among the priorities she highlighted are the proposed Eastern Link Road—which would relieve pressure on town centre traffic—the development of improved rail links to Milton Keynes, and tackling long-standing traffic bottlenecks throughout the area.

Buckinghamshire has seen substantial housing development in recent years, with infrastructure in towns like Aylesbury struggling to keep pace. Local campaigners and councillors have also expressed concerns about the pressures on roads, public transport, and pedestrian access.

The £1.4 million funding is part of a wider government initiative aimed at levelling up transport provision across England. You can see more about the scheme here (external site).
