Amersham student makes final five in national science competition

Divit Kelmani

A student from Amersham has reached the final of The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Competition due to his research on the future of antibiotics.

Judges were quick to notice the unique work being done by Year 10 pupil Divit Kelmani from Dr Challoner's Grammar School, which looks at the development of antibiotics that will be effective against bacteria which is currently resistant to drugs.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as one of ‘the top 10 global public health threats facing humanity’.

Divit, commented in the project: “I wanted to create a solution to this increasingly dangerous issue and started by investigating synergy and potentiation. Antimicrobial resistance is a huge yet under-discussed topic in today’s world and I was astonished when I read that experts had warned that, in a post-antibiotic era, even a cold could kill millions.”

Divit is one of five finalists competing after hundreds of students submitted entries. The final is on Wednesday 22nd June.

The winners in the science and engineering categories will receive a £750 prize, with 3 runners up receiving £250 for their chosen project. The award ceremony will also crown overall winners as UK Young Scientist of the Year and UK Young Engineer of the Year, who will receive a £2,000 prize.

The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Competition aims to recognise and reward young people's achievements in all areas of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and provide them with the opportunity to build their skills and confidence in project-based work.
