Prime Minister Liz Truss has announced her resignation just hours after MP for Buckingham Greg Smith told Bucks Radio he had confidence in the Conservative Party leader.
Having spent just 44 days in power Liz Truss’s premiership has been fraught with troubles recently following a controversial mini-budget four weeks ago.
The economic fallout from the contentious budget resulted in Ms Truss sacking her Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng but many felt the buck stopped with the PM.
Pressure intensified overnight after a chaotic vote yesterday on a Labour motion calling on a vote to ban fracking.
The Government imposed a three-line whip on Tory MPs to vote against the motion causing angry scenes during voting including accusations of manhandling that are now being investigated.
At least 15 MPs had publicly expressed a lack of confidence in the PM but this morning, MP for Buckingham, Greg Smith backed her, saying to Bucks Radio: "I have confidence in the Prime Minister."
Home Secretary Suella Braverman also resigned yesterday, nominally due to a breach of the ministerial code surrounding the use of a personal email account but her resignation letter fired broadsides at the Prime Minister.
Liz Truss became Prime Minister on 6th September after defeating Rishi Sunak in a vote by Conservative Party members.
In a statement at 1:30pm today, 20th October, Ms Truss said: “There will be a leadership election to be completed in the next week.”
Ms Truss will remain as Prime Minister until a successor is chosen.
