Lower Road Closure extended

Works on the route have been delayed, so the road will now be closed until 5pm on Monday June 2nd.

In a statement, the company behind the work have said it's due to "unforeseen ground conditions and the rain earlier this week". They've also apologised for the inconvenience caused.

With most schools returning after the half term break on Monday, it's worth allowing plenty of extra time for journey's on the Stoke Mandeville side of town. Access to businesses will remain, and Redline buses have announced they will operate a free shuttle service between Aylesbury Bus Station and Stoke Mandeville Hospital this weekend. See the timetable, and the full statement about the closure, below.

Road Closed sign

Works on Lower Road have progressed well with respect to kerbing and other civil engineering works, especially on the South side of the roundabout. However, rain earlier in the week and unforeseen ground conditions have hampered some of the works including the surfacing work which has led to a delay.

On the Northern side of the roundabout, an area of approx. 70 x 0.7 x 0.7m of poor ground has been discovered in the existing Lower Road carriageway which did not show up in ground investigation surveys.

This poor ground has had to be excavated and needs to be replaced with foam concrete due to the close proximity of a gas main. The excavation of the ground and then the laying of the concrete is expected to be complete around lunchtime on Friday. To allow sufficient time for the concrete to set, for the road construction and surfacing to then be laid and finally open the road safely to traffic will take longer than the originally planned re-opening late on Sunday night. It is now expected that the work will be completed by 5pm on Monday 2 June 2025 with the road closure remaining in place until then.

The SEALR team are very sorry for this delay to the works and for any inconvenience caused and we ask that you please allow additional time for your journeys.
