A local MP has spoken in Parliament following the new rules associated to the newest COVID-19 variant.
Conservative MP for Wycombe Steve Baker, highlighted what he thought the effect the governments decisions regarding the variant will have:
"Governments approach seems to be to say, 'better safe than sorry - you can't be too careful' the trouble is you CAN be to careful.
There is a problem which I call tunnel vision, where we end up looking only at the disease.
I can't begin to understand what the harm will be to children psychologically of being in masks all the time, and you can't go back and repeat the experiences of Nativity plays missed."
He also picked out faults in the Governments decisions regarding the variant:
" The issue here today is that we are taking away the publics' right to choose what they do based on flimsy and uncertain evidence.
We don't know the extent to which the new variant will escape the vaccines, we don't know how harmful it will be, and this goes towards the nature of society we are creating.
Now we have the case fatality rate down to the same level as flu, we should treat the coronavirus like we treat the flu. "
His comments on the matter have met with a varied reaction on his social media.
Steve Baker's entire speech is up on his twitter page.
