The Buckingham Charter Fair returns to the town this weekend following last year’s cancellation due to the pandemic.
Buckingham’s Mayor, Councillor Margaret Gateley will be on hand, with the Town Crier and Head Showman, to declare the fair open at 1pm on Saturday.
There will also be a special appearance by the newly elected Bard of Buckingham, Sami Tite.
As ever, a whole range of rides and sideshows will be on offer, including old favourites such as the House of Terror, Meteorite, Sizzler, hook a duck and a coconut shy.
Councillor Robin Stuchbury, Chair of the Town Centre & Events Committee said: “Buckingham will be welcoming back the charter fair after a year of Covid lockdown and it is important to recognise the work which has been undertaken between 2020/21 in this period. The events team and councillors have worked carefully to ensure the safe return of this annual event in cooperation with the showman Mr Marshall Nichols.”
The fair will also be open next Saturday, 23rd October.
From 6am Friday 15th October to midday on Sunday 17th October and then again from 6am Friday 22nd October to midday Sunday 24th October, a road closure is in place for all of Market Hill, Market Square and the High Street, to allow rides and sideshows to operate safely. Diversions will be in place.
Buckingham bus stand will be closed from 10am on Friday 15th October until midnight on Saturday 16th October and then again on Friday 22nd October until midnight on Saturday 24th October.
Details of the road closures and bus timetable changes will be available on Buckingham Town Council’s website: www.buckingham-tc.gov.uk.
Buckingham’s first charter to hold the annual market/fair, was given by Mary I in 1554 and the second charter was given by Charles II in 1658. Today, the fair arrives on the Friday morning to set up, and leaves early on the Sunday morning.
