Today (6/6/24) communities across the county, country and around the world will light beacons to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the historic Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II.
This poignant act of remembrance honors the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who took part in Operation Overlord on June 6, 1944, a pivotal moment that contributed significantly to the liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe.
Beacons have long been a symbol of hope, resilience, and unity, and lighting them serves as a powerful tribute to those who fought and those who lost their lives. The anniversary events are expected to include various commemorative activities such as ceremonies, reenactments, and educational programs, ensuring that the legacy of D-Day continues to be remembered and appreciated by future generations.
The lighting of beacons at sunset will create a chain of light across the nation, symbolizing the shared remembrance and collective respect for the heroes of D-Day. This solemn yet uplifting gesture underscores the enduring significance of their contributions to peace and freedom.

Residents and friends of Princes Risborough are invited to join the Town Council in the Stratton Memorial Garden, later tonight. Cllr Alan Frost from Princes Risborough Town Council, is delighted how the local community has joined together to remember this 80th anniversary:
Alan also told us the importance and significance of beacon lighting across the nation:
