A number of residents are becoming increasingly concerned by what they describe as “dangerous and unsustainable” nuisance parking across the town.
A strongly-worded email sent to Bucks Radio highlights the persistent flouting of parking laws, particularly by fast food delivery drivers. Problem areas such as Cambridge Street have reportedly become hotspots for vehicles mounting pavements and even driving along pedestrian paths—posing serious risks to public safety.
"Vehicles not only mount pavements but are seen driving along them, sometimes coming alarmingly close to families and children," the email states. "There have even been reports of verbal abuse when these drivers are confronted."
It's claimed pavements, cycle paths, and double yellow lines are routinely ignored, forcing pedestrians—including those with disabilities and parents with young children—into the road to get by. Many pavements are now damaged, worsening the accessibility issue.
The lack of enforcement is also addressed. The email accuse the council, traffic officers, and police of inaction, leading to what they call a “perception of impunity” for offending drivers.
Cllr Richard Lloyd, Leader of Aylesbury Town Council, echoed these concerns, warning that inconsiderate and illegal parking is a "significant problem" not just in the town centre but particularly around schools. He called for Buckinghamshire Council and Thames Valley Police to ramp up enforcement and urged better long-term planning.
"The town’s infrastructure is under severe pressure,” Lloyd said. “Local school places are not being provided soon enough with new housing, bus services have been steadily reduced, and key infrastructure projects like the Aylesbury link of East-West Rail and relief roads are still outstanding."
When approached for comment, Thames Valley Police directed responsibility for enforcement on double yellow lines to Buckinghamshire Council, suggesting they should be contacted for any action.
The email, from a group representing concerned residents, concludes "This situation is not just frustrating—it's dangerous and unsustainable. Aylesbury deserves better. We would like to see meaningful action and consistent enforcement before an already bad situation turns catastrophic.
Steve Bowles, Cabinet Member for Communities for Buckinghamshire Council, said:
“We recognise resident concerns about inconsiderate parking in Aylesbury. Please report contraventions via FixMyStreet—ideally noting specific days and times—so we can deploy patrols where they are most needed. Where yellow lines are in place, we will enforce against pavement parking; in unrestricted areas, obstruction should be reported to Thames Valley Police at https://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/how-to-report-a-crime/ or by calling 101. Abandoned vehicles fall under our waste services team and can be reported at https://www.buckinghamshire.gov.uk/parking-roads-and-transport/report-problems-on-roads-streets-and-pavements/report-an-abandoned-vehicle/. Accurate, detailed reports help us keep Aylesbury’s roads and pavements safe and accessible.”
